beauty. a word carefully used in reference to art since more classical times in painting.

while i take the Guerrilla Girls’ point entirely (and thank them for their work) i still find the female nude to be divinely beautiful
today we can at least agree that it rests in the eye of the beholder
today’s musings begin with my new online MoMA course, Five Puzzles of Contemporary Art. the course challenges views on beauty, value, originality, concept and experience in contemporary art
should aesthetic pleasure be a goal in art making? worthy or not, it is a goal of mine
one lecture, given by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner, proposes that the art of our time needs to go beyond traditional beauty to consider ‘interestingness’, ‘memorability of form’, and ‘creating a sense of awe’ in its evaluation
interestingness for sure. i need work on ‘sense of awe’
will keep at it

my mind is fixed these days on physics and the word of the Buddha
among other things
“Impermanent are all created things;
Strive on with awareness”
with that, i am preparing for my next live art collaboration
( Chinatown Remixed would be great event perhaps!)
it starts with this call to all artists, bold and timid alike
to submit to me a small original work on paper
a created thing
i will post them here as i am doing with “proton moving from A to B by all possible paths” (for example)

collected for the big day
expected in may
i will ask participants to choose a work, or make a work
and take scissors to it
snip snip
impermanence

from there i will have pieces to make a collage
a new creation
(which we can also cut up!)
so if you are an artist (of any sort) fascinated by creation send me a message and i will send you the mailing address
deadline for receipt of work: May 1st, 2013
collaboartive@gmail.com
do it. it will be fun. the more art the more fun. any sort. doodles count. everything works. tell your friends. do it. please and thank you.

p.s. works will not be returned! hahaha

what is your feeling on the state of humanity?
gold = positive and hopeful
teal = neutral and things are as they are
black = concerned and negative

the black marks were emphatic but the gold won the night
sending many heARTs to my many collaborators
it is a joy to create with you and the reason i am one thumb gold
the other is black until more of our energy is spent this way
my thanks to the museum of nature for the great event
next month i may come dance!

tonight is the night
party at the dinosaur museum!!!
another collaboration in the works

Museum of Nature
january twenty-fifth 8pm – midnight
the intention of this project is to allow the night shape a collaborative inter-active piece in celebration of connectedness, both within ourselves and with those among us.
the museum of nature is an ideal setting to have individuals consider the state of human nature and contribute their creative energy to a painting made up of three different colours of thumbprint. a large canvas is prepared with twenty-three strips of fine paper. attendees will be encouraged to choose one of three colours: gold, teal, or black to make their mark. the colours are attached to the following sentiments; gold for a positive hopeful view, teal for a neutral laissez-faire attitude, and black for those with less hope. the image will reveal a temperature of sorts. the mood of the group at the event.
the transfer of the collective creativity energy should be interesting at least, beautiful at best.
hope to see you there

travelled by train to toronto
frida Kahlo & diego Rivera met me there
impressive special show at the Art Gallery of Ontario
(impressive enough to steal a few snaps. oops)

Frida Kahlo – Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair (special exhibit at the AGO)

this makes total sense to me. you?
Kahlo’s emotional frankness, bravery, and strength are long time inspirations
and their story together is endlessly fascinating
…also made me long for the food of Puebla
i am inviting frida and diego to my fantasy dinner party
and will get them to bring the mole
thank you toronto for the dose of urbanity
